A real scandal!

About 30 years ago the parlament in Lisbon gave its permission for the development of Salgados on the other side of the lagoon in the middle of a natural reserve.

The luxury buildings on the other side of the lagoa(Albufeira/Galé) have already destroyed the dunes- and are almost completely empty.
Its huge fitness/wellness club has closed its doors and Silves gives the permission to destroy the unique landsape and build another complexe!!!

Hello Jaime, thank you for your comment. I think your bouganvillea should be in a large pot and you might be able to shelter it over the winter. I like your blog ! We do have different conditions here but the native plants of Portugal are wonderful everywhere.
best wishes.

Hi, I have found your blog only now. It seems very interesting. I understand that you are gardening in the Algarve and the climate conditions are a bit different from central and northern Portugal. You don´t have the frost time, like we do in the interior and beira. for instance I can´t grow buganvilia in my area. I´ve tried but it always dies in Winter. Anyway, I will be checking on your site for some information, I also have one blog about gardening hope you like: http://jamesjardimsuspenso.blogspot.pt/
best regards

Thank you Marilyn for your helpful comments on how to deal with this invasive pest. Removing flowers as soon as they are seen has to be a good idea, and decapitation can be so satisfying ! Establishing some competition also sounds like a good idea.

Hi Rosie,
I have had this everywhere I have worked in the Algarve so far. It is a horror, especially if in a formal bed or situation where chemicals are not an option, and as Oron says it has deep bulbs which are both impossible to remove and resistant to chemicals.
I used to pull them up (where they were invading a rose garden) but this was a fortnightly task.
I think Udo's suggestion is the best - put a few low-growing shrubs around the olive tree, lavenders or cistus could work well. That way you will at least have the immediate effect of not seeing the cyperus. Being attentive to they Cyperus's flowers and removing them as soon as they appear would also not be a bad idea. Good luck!
