This is Algarve gardening – from Peter Eaton, Monchique, Western Algarve
Posted by Rosie Peddle under How was it for you ? advice and suggestions on what you can grow[5] Comments
It is the beginning of December. This morning between the rain showers, in dazzling sunshine, I went for a walk to see my winter garden. This was a truly astonishing experience because I found 50 different species that I have planted in the last few years all flowering – I mean now altogether in December! (In November we had night temperatures down to 5C and only 60mm rain.) For those of you who have limited experience of gardening in the Algarve I hope the following list might be helpful. Hello jp, Yes, indeed, citrus are flowering now but I think Peter does not think of them as garden flowers ! He has certainly come up with an inspiring list. Many thanks for your comment. Best wishes, Rosie

Ciao! I live in Porto, Portugal and I am getting ready to start my seeds indoors. Wondering if you knew, when the best time to move seedlings outdoors here is? I dont want to risk planting too early and having them freeze to death! Any advice would be great! Thanks

Hello Solana,
Thank you for your comment. If you do not have any shelter outside for your seedlings, then keep them in a cool room indoors until end of February. If you can give the new small plants lots of light they will be happy.
You could try putting them into small pots so that they can get a root system developed before you put them into the ground. If they are on a windowsill then remember to turn them so they do not all lean into the light. Good Luck !
